It had been a long time since we had been to Strahan and we were excited to explore the west coast of Tasmania and everything it offers especially picturesque Strahan and the first-rate attractions.
However, the only way we were going to have a great time is if we found the right accommodation for our family of five.
Enter the Big4 Strahan Holiday Retreat. Located a 15 minute walk from the main waterfront area, this 5-hectare property sounded pretty and perfect for us to run around and explore. Add the big range of relatively affordable accommodation options including a big 4 bedroom cottage and we were sold!
So was it what we expected?
Below, you will find our full Big 4 Strahan Holiday Retreat review including what the accommodation options are like, what facilities exist and where you can find the Big4 Strahan.

Big4 Strahan Holiday Retreat Review
Location Of Big4 Strahan Holiday Retreat
This Big 4 Strahan Tasmania is located at 8-10 Innes St walking distance to many attractions in Strahan. It’s one block from West Strahan Beach and a playground and there is plenty to do in the surrounds.
It’s on a huge property with its own creek and resident platypus. It’s basically a whole block on the map.

Rooms
There are a range of accommodation options at the Big 4 Caravan Park Strahan. There are cabins and cottages as well as powered and unpowered sites for caravans and campers.
The cabins and cottages range from one bedroom to four bedrooms and come complete with private bathrooms, heating, TVs, fridges, electric heaters and tea/coffee making facilities. All have at least a kitchenette with most having a full kitchen. Linen is provided and outdoor decks are common.
We stayed in a four bedroom cottage.

Retreat Cottage 4 Bedroom
The Strahan Caravan Park Big 4 four bedroom cottage is a spacious house which sleeps up to 14 people! So there is plenty of room for our family of five. To summarise, there is a full kitchen, lounge and dining areas, four bedrooms and two bathrooms. There is also air conditioning and heating and its own yard.

The entry way in the 4 bedroom cottage
The car spot is right out the front. On entry to the 4 bedroom cottage is an entry area with table and couch. This then leads into the large living room with plenty of seating and a huge dining table. There is a big split cycle heater/air conditioner in here.

Kitchen
The kitchen is fully equipped and had everything we needed including a full fridge.
To the side of the kitchen is the first queen sized bed room. Both this and the room next to it have queen size beds, some type of bedside tables and somewhere to put a suitcase. There are no cupboards.

First bedroom

Second bedroom
Along the hallway that leads from the kitchen are bedrooms down one side and bathrooms down the other.

Hallway past the kitchen
For bathrooms, there is a toilet in its own room, then a bathroom with shower, vanity and toilet. Finally next along is a bathroom with bath and vanity (but no toilet).

Main bedroom
On the other side of the hall is the second room plus a third which is a bit larger with queen sized bed, bedside tables and a built in cupboard.
Finally at the end of the hall is a big room with three bunk beds, a sofa bed and a small TV and DVD player. The TV did not work though. There is also a small portable heater and a fan.

4th bedroom with 3 bunks and lounge area
Off the living area is an entry to the back and side yards. One is grassed, the other has seating areas. It’s all very nice and a nice surprise as well as we didn’t expect our own yard.
This house is comfortable, clean and very spacious. It was perfect for us and it would be great for bigger families as we easily could have fit more people in here comfortably. It would also be great with young kids thanks to having the fully fenced yard.

Outside area – there is also a grassed lawn on another side
I have two sisters that have five kids each and I’m definitely going to be pointing them in this direction! It would also work great for two families or an extended family.
Facilities

Inside the games room. It’s a good collection
The Strahan Big 4 Caravan Park has plenty of facilities and activities to keep you interested. These include a games room as well as board games and DVD hire.
There’s also an onsite cafe, shop and bottle shop. Multiple coin operated laundries are also available including one on the street by the shop that anyone can use. It did cost $13 for us to do a load though ($5 wash then 2 x $4 dry).

The grounds are extensive and perfect for exploring along their walking tracks or enjoying a picnic at one of the picnic areas and BBQ facilities. Keep a look out for wildlife, especially for the platypus in the creek.
If you are ready to get active, you can hire kayaks, canoes, bikes and paddle boats. Or simply play table tennis in the games room.

Amenity Block

Part of the Alexander Pearce Story
For something different, they also have a hut called “The Alexander Pearce Story”. Here, there are information boards and a model of Alexander which tell the story of the infamous convict who escaped Sarah Island and engaged in cannibalism.
I had read that it had a playground but this wasn’t true. There is one about five minutes walk away though near the beach.
Dining

BBQ and picnic area
The onsite cafe and shop for supplies at the Big 4 Holiday Park Strahan make dining here very easy. There is pizza and fried food on offer or you can cook your own.
The grounds are nice and having a BBQ is also a great option.
You’re also just a short drive or longer walk into the centre of town with many dining options available. Note we were warned that restaurants fill up, especially on weekends, so it’s good to book ahead although this wasn’t an issue at all when we came in late December.
Final Words

There are many great bushy areas in the park
The Big4 Strahan Holiday Retreat is a lovely and easy place to be. The bushy surrounds with creek give it a relaxed vibe and I think the word “Retreat” in its title is appropriate. I never heard any noise apart from the occasional car.
The four bedroom cottage is perfect for bigger families or people who love space. We loved staying in it and found the price very reasonable.
We will happily stay here again!
